Introduction to Health Care Quality; Theory, Methods and Tools helps students and health professionals make sense of contemporary issues in quality management in the context of a rapidly changing, data-driven health care environment. CONTENTS: Chapter 1- Introduction This introductory chapter will briefly outline important topics in contemporary quality management and highlight the information required for health care professionals to work effectively in todays health care reform environment. It will summarize the content of each chapter and describe how to best use the lessons learned, the things to think about questions, and the quality concepts in action sections that accompany each chapter. Quality concepts in action: Discussion of the paradigm shift in cardiac care from physician opinion to data that define the standard of care (evidence-based medicine). Chapter 2 Foundations of Health Care Quality Chapter 2 will introduce the fundamentals of quality management for health care and offer a brief history of how theories and methods of quality management evolved over time. Quality concepts in action: Never events - Using data to understand how to develop a process to control problems, such as pressure ulcers.  Chapter 3 Understanding the Impact of Health Care Reform Chapter 3 will introduce the paradigm shift involved in the way health care is understood and managed in the new reform environment. Quality concepts in action: Relating quality and finance - Discussion of bundled payment fixed price for cardiac surgery. Chapter 4 New Challenges for Health Care Professionals In todays health care environment, quality, nurse, unit and administrative managers have to incorporate data and teamwork into their daily working life. Chapter 4 will discuss how to use data to effectively monitor care and manage responsibilities and also how to work together in effective teams. Quality concepts in action: Understanding readmission - Managing care for heart failure patients across the continuum of care. Chapter 5 The Role of Leadership in Improving Patient Safety Chapter 5 will describe the challenges faced by leadership in meeting the constantly moving target of health care goals, and offer potential solutions to these challenges. Quality concepts in action: The C-suite: Understanding organizational dashboards and pay-for-performance. Chapter 6 - Working with Quality Data Chapter 6 will focus on how to use quality data to assess, monitor and improve care. Quality concepts in action: Understanding issues related to validity through discussion of the complexity of mortality data. Chapter 7 Working with Quality Measures Chapter 7 will introduce the role of quality measures in relation to different aspects of the health care organization, from business intelligence to resource allocation to care management. Chapter 8 Working with Quality Tools and Methods Chapter 8 will explain how to use different methodologies appropriately, and ways to determine which method is best suited to which problem. It will also define how to use quality tools, such as control charts, to monitor care. Quality concepts in action: Using Rapid PDSA for analyzing issues involved in and improving sepsis. Chapter 9 - Translating Information into Action Chapter 9 will provide information about how to apply quality management data, tools and methods to daily issues in the workplace. Quality concepts in action: Understanding how the governing body, the Board of Trustees, makes use of quality data to force hospitals to take specific actions for improvement. Chapter 10 Preparing for the Future This chapter will highlight the challenges health care organizations face in preparing to meet the requirements of health care reform.
